Alkalinity vs Acidity: the pH of the blood speaks of your health

WHAT DOES ALKALINE AND ACID MEAN?

Surely you've heard lately about alkalinity, acidity, alkaline diets... and perhaps you don't know exactly what it refers to.

Alkaline and acid are two concepts that refer to the pH state of the blood. But what is blood pH?

pH is the index that measures the concentration of hydrogen ions (hydrogen potential) in our blood or any fluid in our body, and tells us whether it is acidic, alkaline or neutral.

It is measured on a scale that goes from 0 to 14, with 7 being the neutral measurement. If it is below pH 7 it indicates acidity, and above pH 7 it indicates alkalinity.

For our vital processes to develop correctly, the pH in the blood must be slightly alkaline and between 7.35 and 7.45 (7.4).

That is, pH is a blood indicator that helps us get an idea of our state of health.

ACID - ALKALINE BALANCE

Our body is wise enough, and has its own regulation mechanism. Body fluids, lungs, kidneys, skin, digestive system and liver play a fundamental role in maintaining the acid-alkaline balance of our body in perfect condition (appropriate pH level) and eliminating or neutralizing toxins.

The imbalance between acidic substances and alkaline substances occurs when any of these organs cannot perform their function correctly, and is caused mainly by diet and factors from the environment, lifestyle habits, stress, and even the metabolism itself.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE PH IS EXCESSIVELY ACID?

Given an excessive consumption of acidic foods and a lack of alkaline foods, the purifying organs collapse and cannot eliminate as many toxins, producing excess metabolic acidity.

An excess of acidity is considered in the values between 7 and 7.35 pH.

When excess acidity occurs, the blood uses two systems:

The first consists of depositing acids in the connective tissue or joints, waiting for a greater alkaline supply.

To avoid more serious disorders, try to access the reserve of alkaline minerals (sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium) deposited in the blood, in the bones and cartilage, and in the muscles. That is, the blood steals nutrients with the sole objective of restoring the acid-alkaline balance that allows the body to function properly.

Symptoms of acidosis in the blood can be: chronic lack of energy, dull hair, cavities, infections, brittle nails, dry skin and changes in the physiological function of cellular metabolism, such as kidney or liver dysfunctions, demineralization, neoplasms...

Thus, the consequences of excess acidity on our health are:

  • It decreases our body's ability to absorb essential nutrients.
  • It reduces the capacity of our purifying organs to detoxify themselves from the heavy metals and toxic substances generated.
  • There is a greater predisposition to suffer from degenerative organic states.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE PH IS EXCESSIVELY ALKALINE?

Alkalosis is a hydroelectrolyte disorder, that is, an excessive increase in alkaline minerals (with a small electrical charge) in the body fluids, which generates alterations in the blood plasma.

These alterations may be due to:

  • Eating an inadequate diet that causes an acid-alkaline imbalance.
  • Excessive consumption of alkalizing medications.
  • Hyperventilation, due to height or very rapid breathing.
  • Excessive or continuous vomiting.
  • Endocrine and metabolic imbalance.
  • Values between 7.45 – 7.8 pH are considered alkalosis.

There may also be consequences due to excess alkalinity in the blood, since at a pH of 7.5 there may be arrhythmias, heart failure, and kidney problems.

WHY SHOULD THE PH BE MORE ALKALINE THAN ACID?

In conclusion, we can affirm that extremes are not good, since both have negative consequences for our health. But something we must be clear about is that, to have an optimal state of health, we need a slightly alkaline pH. Because?.

In an alkaline environment all the cells in our body have oxygen, vitamins, minerals and enzymes; nutrients that play an essential role in keeping our vital organs and cells in perfect condition.

By following an alkaline diet we help our purifying organs eliminate toxins and maintain a balanced pH, thus strengthening the immune system and ensuring that the cells receive enough oxygen and nutrients, essential to maintain a perfect acid-alkaline balance. In this way we help our body to be in an optimal state of health.
